Learn about the nanotechnology at Oakton open house

Looking for the fast track to a rewarding technology career? Join Oakton Community College for a free nanotechnology open house event from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Illinois Science + Technology Park (IS+TP) Conference Center, 8045 Lamon Ave., Skokie.

The federal government notes, "Nanotechnology has the potential to profoundly change our economy and improve our standard of living."

In fact, the National Science Foundation estimates that 6 million nanotechnology workers will be needed by 2020, in addition to 2.5 million support personnel. Salaries range from $30,000 to $95,000, depending on the level of education. Oakton's 31-credit-hour nanotechnology certificate prepares students to enter this growing field.

On the cutting edge of science, nanotechnology plays a critical role in biology, chemistry, engineering, medicine, and physics - from building microprocessors and delivering anti-cancer drugs efficiently to making clothes more stain resistant and improving sunscreen absorption.

At the open house, prospective students will have the chance to learn about career opportunities, discuss Oakton's nanotech curriculum with faculty and alumni and tour the laboratory. Parking is available at 4835 Searle Parkway.

Registration for the open house is encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. Visit www.ne3i.eventbrite.com to attend one of the free open houses.

Oakton will offer the four-credit Fundamentals of Nanotechnology I (PHY 140 0Y1) and Fundamentals of Nanotechnology II (PHY 141 0Y1) courses in spring 2018. Both play a fundamental role in completing Oakton's nanotechnology certificate.

Gain hands-on experience in a nanotechnology lab and work with atomic and electron microscopes, nano-analysis tools, and profilometers that enhance 3-D imaging. Upon course completion, students may apply for internship opportunities offered by science and technology companies housed at the IS+TP.

Enrollment is limited, and spring classes begin Tuesday, Jan. 16. Fundamentals of Nanotechnology I meets 6:30-9:20 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Jan. 17. Fundamentals of Nanotechnology II meets 6:30-9:20 p.m. Mondays starting Jan. 22. Register today at www.oakton.edu/apply.
