Brookdale's knitting club gives to Lake County YWCA

From their hands and heart, two needles and a skein of yarn, the residents at Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes create something magical every year for the Teen Mom Program at Lake County YWCA.

Every Thursday, in the lobby of Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes, the knitting club, In Stitches, can be found socializing and knitting baby clothes and blankets, all to be given away.

In Stitches has been donating these handmade items to the children and moms of the Lake County YWCA for over 15 years. Additionally, Dollars for Diapers, a collection that In Stitches organizes, is a way for all of the residents to contribute. Money donated helps provide necessities for the babies and is given along with the knit items.

"The philanthropic spirit of the residents is truly inspiring," Executive Director Lynette Rugg said. "But In Stitches doesn't only benefit the Teen Mom Program, it benefits our residents too. Working on a knitting project can be an excellent source of mental, physical and social stimulation."

The club is a place to meet new people, learn new stitches, laugh, and do something good for others. All levels of expertise in knitting and crocheting are welcome to join, even those new to knitting.
