Gain historical insight on meat preservation at Volkening Heritage Farm

Discover how bacon and other meats kept 19th century farm families fed all winter during Schaumburg Park District's From Hog House to Smokehouse.

The event is set for noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at Spring Valley's Volkening Heritage Farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road.

Learn to make sausage, smoke hams and witness how 1880s farm families used every part of the pig. Children's activities will be available throughout the day.

"We show how people 130 years ago cut and preserved meat," said Patty Kennedy, farm program coordinator. "It's an opportunity to view traditional cuts of meat and learn where they come from."

Admission is $3 per person and $12 per family of six or fewer. Additional family members are $3 each, free for kids ages 3 and younger. Refreshments and food will be available for purchase.

Parking will be available at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. A free wagon shuttle will take visitors to the farm.
