Palatine Jaycees host STEM Fair at Winston Campus

The Palatine Jaycees, as part of its Adopt-a-School Day program, is hosting a free STEM Fair from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Winston Campus Elementary School, 900 E. Palatine Road, Palatine, for students and family members from Winston Campus and its feeder elementary schools.

The Jaycees have partnered with Northern Illinois University to coordinate more than 70 activities for kindergarten through sixth-grade students. These activities promote the concept of STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Every registered student will be entered into a raffle for prizes, including education games and toys, as well as an Amazon Kindle.

"The STEM fair is a fun way for the entire family to learn about concepts such as energy, waves, light and optics, lasers, electricity and more through demonstrations and hands-on activities," said Alex Green, project co-chairman.

"We are delighted to team up with an area college to promote STEM in our grade schools. We hope to inspire the next generation of scientists, mathematicians and engineers."

"Building on the past two years, the Palatine Jaycees expanded on the size of the STEM Fair this year in both programming and attendees," said Lindsay Schubel Nagle, project co-chairwoman.

"We are inviting all four of Winston Campus feeder schools this year. There will even be a liquid nitrogen floor demonstration at 7 p.m."

Adopt-A-School Day is a day of service to schools that is initiated and facilitated by the Junior Chamber International, also known as the Jaycees. The Adopt-A-School Day program works with businesses, organizations and schools to create one day where collaboration, vision and service can make a difference for a school.

Initiated by the Hawaii Jaycees in 2008, JCI U.S.A. adopted the program as a National Priority Program in the fall of 2013.

Every year, the Palatine Jaycees conduct numerous programs to serve the community and accumulate funds for operation of the chapter and community donations.

Included in these projects are the Fourth of July Festival Hometown Fest, Christmas tree sales, Best Pizza Contest and others, which benefit the community directly and help raise money.

The Palatine Chapter of the Jaycees, one of 60 local chapters throughout Illinois, has close to 125 members and is one of the largest chapters in Illinois. The Jaycees provide individuals between the ages of 21 and 40 the opportunity to develop personal and leadership skills while serving their community.

The Palatine Chapter holds its monthly general meeting at 7:30 p.m. the third Thursday of the month at the American Legion Hall on Palatine Road, Palatine. For details, visit www.palatinejaycees.org, email info@palatinejaycees.org or call (847) 604-0288.
