Elgin Vineyard supporting rural Filipinos with new Dignity Coconuts business

Dignity Coconuts, a business started locally that's changing lives in the Philippines, will be selling its premier product - virgin, organic coconut oil - on Sunday, Nov. 12, at Vineyard Church of Elgin, 220 Division St.

Dignity was started by Vineyard church members who were looking for a way to help lift people out of poverty and modern-day slavery. Singling out a poor, rural Filipino community, they tapped into a most abundant natural resource, the coconut, to build a business offering ethical employment and dignity to people whose extreme poverty had often led to desperate decisions.

The community is being transformed in many healthy ways, and so is the environment. Dignity has discovered how to use 100 percent of the coconut so nothing goes to waste; what would normally be thrown away is turned into products that prevent soil erosion and reduce the use of plastics.

The tangible benefit to the American consumer is an unrefined, non-GMO coconut oil with many health benefits.

Dignity coconut oil is available at Meijer and amazon.com. On Sunday, it will be for sale at Elgin Vineyard from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and 12:30 to 12:45 p.m.

Pastor Tom Severson's message this weekend, "Truth and Lies," is from 1 John Chapter 4. In it, he will examine the nature of truth and falsehood - they exist, and they're personal in nature. Far more than mere facts, Truth is a person: Jesus Christ.

Rev. Severson will be teaching at both the 9 and 11 a.m. services. Free coffee is offered downstairs at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m., and everyone is welcome to attend.
