Volunteers needed for annual Salvation Army Thanksgiving Dinner

Consider offering a helping hand for the third annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner Wednesday, Nov. 22, at The Salvation Army in Crystal Lake.

The dinner not only brings people together in McHenry County for a hot meal, it brings the community together to celebrate volunteerism and giving back to others.

Captain Carol Lewis, corps officer of The Salvation Army of McHenry County, said, "We are excited to host our third annual Thanksgiving dinner because it allows our staff, advisory board, and volunteers to serve those who might be alone during the holiday season, or who are in need of assistance, or who just want to be part of a fellowship."

All McHenry County community members are welcome to enjoy a traditional meal of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, dessert and beverage for free served by the staff and volunteers of The Salvation Army of McHenry County.

It will be from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, at The Salvation Army, 290 W. Crystal Lake Ave.

Volunteers are needed for kitchen setup, serving food, greeting people, directing cars in the parking lot, and cleanup. Volunteer hours begin at 7 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. Shifts are available by calling the office at (815) 455-2769. For more information, visit www.salarmycl.org.

The Salvation Army-McHenry County Corps will be hosting other holiday happenings. In 2016, more than 13,000 gifts were provided to 1,800 local children through the Christmas Toyland Shop and Angel Tree program. Donations and volunteers are needed.

Volunteers are needed for signup of clients, sorting toys, setting up Toyland, client distribution and cleanup.

Individuals, companies, churches and clubs are needed to be an Angel Tree sponsor and to purchase toys and clothing for children in need.

Last year, an all-volunteer bell ringing program raised more than $200,000 for programs and services to individuals and families in McHenry County throughout the year. Local funds stay local supporting youth, seniors and those in need.

Volunteer to be a bell ringer between Nov. 11 and Dec. 23. Two or more hour shifts are available.
