Aquila Theatre's 'Sense & Sensibility' Nov. 3 at CLC

Jane Austen's popular novel "Sense & Sensibility" will come to life at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County in an innovative production by the critically acclaimed Aquila Theatre.

Before the main stage performance at 7 p.m., the audience is invited to a free, interactive preperformance talk in Room P103 (Harnish Experimental Theatre), where Aquila Theatre members will speak about the company, the play, the concept for the production and the show from their viewpoint as artists.

One of the most popular and beloved authors of all time, Jane Austen wrote with great insight and wit about the lives of the English upper middle class. "Sense & Sensibility" cleverly illustrates the effects of economic uncertainty brought about by the common practice of the firstborn male inheriting entire family fortunes, often leaving the rest of the family to fend for themselves.

The characters live in a world in which choices are limited, especially for women. The story revolves around the lives of two sisters: Elinor, who is level headed and full of sense, and the hopelessly romantic Marianne. After the untimely and unexpected death of their father, both sisters and their mother are forced to leave their comfortable lives, while their half-brother and his wife inherit the family estate. The only hope for the two sisters is a profitable marriage. Seduction, courtship, love, heartbreak and surprise abound in this classic romantic comedy.

Directed by Aquila's artistic director Desiree Sanchez, this production incorporates her innovative use of space, movement, design and sound.

Aquila visits 50-60 American cities per year and travels abroad with a program of two plays, workshops and educational programming. The company has twice performed at the White House and received a Chairman's Special Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities for its innovative applied theater public programming. "Sense & Sensibility" (Jessica Swale adaptation) is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. Visit baylinartists.com/aquila-sense-and-sensibility.
