On August 23rd at Five Seasons Northbrook: 'Stay Fit While You Sit'

Sitting can be hazardous to your health-especially if it's for extended periods of time and resembles "slouching."

Clearly, there is a proper, and a perilous, way to sit. On Wednesday, August 23rd, Dr. John Wascow will lead a workshop on the subject at Five Seasons Family Sports Club, 1300 Techny Road in Northbrook.

Starting at 6 p.m., in "Stay Fit While You Sit: Ergonomics for a Healthier You," Wascow will demonstrate ways to prevent back, neck and other problems such as Carpal Tunnel syndrome. The one-hour session, which will include a question-and-answer period, is free and open to the public.

Among the topics to be covered: chair quality, posture, desk placement, lower-back health, neck health, and stretches that reduce pain and muscle tightness. The presentation will also encompass repetitive motion pains and injuries, how to avoid them, and treatment options to recover from them.

The information is particularly relevant to professionals who work in a range of positions, such as managers, receptionists, computer operators, and other jobs that require sitting for long periods of time.

One of the doctor's tips: to stretch your lower back, bend forward and bring your chin to your knees. Hold that stretch for 10 seconds, and repeat three times. This will stretch the muscles and make you feel a little "looser" in your lower back.

In July, Wascow presented "Three Secrets to a Healthy Life" at Five Seasons.

A native of Hawthorn Woods, Wascow suffered a serious head injury in a motorcycle accident nearly 15 years ago. His recovery included six months of grueling rehabilitation during which time he learned to walk and regain his coordination. The experience fueled his desire to help others get out of pain, to get healthy, and to stay healthy.

"Every day, we either get closer to or further away from our optimal health," said Wascow. "And it's true that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Sometimes, what seems like a trivial task can have a profound impact on our health. You never know unless you try."

A board-certified chiropractor since 2009, Dr. Wascow is the owner of the JW Center for Spinal Health at 1500 Shermer Road, Suite 320-E in Northbrook. He provides acupuncture and chiropractic services, as well as guidance on nutrition's integral role in our lives.
