Girls volleyball: Barrington handles Huntley

Playing nine matches in nine days, including a tough Mid-Suburban League match at Fremd Tuesday night, one might think Barrington would be suffering fatigue and play lethargically in a nonconference girls volleyball match at perennial power Huntley Wednesday night.

That didn't happen.

Playing with tremendous effort and poise, the Fillies moved to 12-4 on the 2021 campaign with an impressive 25-22, 25-18 win over the host Red Raiders.

"We played some really good volleyball teams over the last week.," said Barrington coach Michelle Jakubowski. "We played with great energy to win at Fremd and beat some good teams like Lyons and Hononegah at the Mother McAuley Tournament. I liked our energy to start tonight. Huntley has great tradition and we knew they wouldn't quit."

Junior Campbell Paris paced the Fillies with 9 kills, 5 blocks and 2 aces.

"We knew we had to come with energy and get off to a good start," said Paris. "We served hard and we ran our different options on offense."

Paris received plenty of help from her teammates. Jessica Horwath added 5 kills, 2 blocks and 3 aces while sophomore setter Gwen Adler contributed 10 assists with 4 aces.

Allyson Panzlaff led the Red Raiders (7-3) with 7 kills and Avary DeBlieck contributed 6 kills. Maggie Duyos had 12 assists and defensively collected 12 digs.

"Barrington is a scrappy strong team," said Huntley coach Karen Naymola. "We are struggling right now with serve receive."

Barrington started fast in Set 1. With 2 kills from Paris and 2 aces from Adler, the Fillies jumped out to an 8-2 lead.

But the resilient Raiders refused to quit.

A kill by Panzlaff tied the game at 13-13. With the score tied at 22, Barrington scored the final 3 points to win the set. Kills by Jenna Meitzler and Paris along with an ace by Bre Dunn gave the Fillies a 1-0 lead in the match.

Like in Set 1, the Fillies started fast in Set 2. A block from Paris lifted the visitors to an early 9-2 advantage. Huntley climbed to within 13-11 on a kill by DeBlieck but couldn't get any closer.

Barrington put the set and match on ice with a 7-0 run to take a 20-11 lead. The Fillies won the game and match on a kill by Howarth.
