Engel goes 1-for-4 in return to White Sox's lineup

Out since Aug. 13 with left shoulder inflammation, Adam Engel returned from the injury list Tuesday and started in right field against the Tigers.

To clear a roster spot for Engel, infielder Romy Gonzalez was optioned to Class AAA Charlotte.

Engel, who has also dealt with hamstring injuries this season, went 1-for-4 in the White Sox's 5-3 loss to Detroit.

"He's an outstanding defender, baserunner and competitor," manager Tony La Russa said. "We've had him a couple of times and lost him, we need to keep him out there and do everything we can to make that happen. He's a really good player, so he helps us."
