Warren back on track; Antioch's Glashagel picks up 100th win
The Warren football team is doing just fine, thank-you.
The Blue Devils showed zero after effects of their Week 2 loss to state power Maine South as evidenced in a 56-0 victory over Zion-Benton in the North Suburban Conference opener for both teams Friday in Zion.
Warren (2-1, 1-0 NSC) came into the game ranked No. 4 in the most recent Associated Press Class 8A state rankings, while Zion-Benton was 2-0 after outscoring its first two opponents by a combined 88-6.
Warren quarterback Aiden Lucero threw for 112 yards and 4 touchdowns. Jaylen Williams caught 2 passes for 75 yards - both touchdowns. Joel Williams had a 23-yard touchdown catch, while Xavier Schild had a 14-yard touchdown grab.
Maurice Edwards carried the ball 9 times for 118 yards and scored 3 touchdowns.
"Our kids came out and played really well," Warren coach Bryan McNulty said. "They were focused on the right things and prepared all week. We knew from some of the things they were saying on social media that they were going to be a confident team, as they should be considering they were 2-0. We knew we would have to prepare well and the kids did a great job of that."
McNulty was particularly impressed with the effort turned in from his signal-caller. "Aidan played very well, throwing 4 touchdowns," McNulty said. "He also managed the offense well all night."
Defensively, Jailen Duffie was a standout for Warren. "Jailen was consistently taking away their top receiver at cornerback," McNulty noted. "He also had a big kickoff return to begin the game."
Warren heads to Lake Zurich (1-2, 0-1) Friday to continue NSC play. Lake Zurich lost to undefeated Libertyville 28-19 Friday.
Antioch 42, North Chicago 0:
The Sequoits opened defense of their Northern Lake County Conference title with this win at home against North Chicago.
The win also was Antioch head coach Brian Glashagel's 100th of his career. According to IHSA records this is his 15th season at the helm. Since 2016, Antioch teams have gone 45-8, including four seasons of eight or more wins.
Antioch heads to Grayslake North (0-3, 0-1) Friday.
Lakes 36, Round Lake 6:
Lakes continued to get it done on the ground Friday in this Northern Lake County Conference win over Round Lake.
Running back Mark Hunter again went over the 100-yard mark, while running back Amir Al Hindi returned from injury and also broke 100 yards rushing to help the Eagles win their second game in a row and improve to 2-1 overall (1-0 NLCC).
"Our running game once again was a big key to our success," Lakes coach Jordan Eder said. "Our defense played well and held Round Lake to only 6 points."
Round Lake dropped to 1-2 overall (0-1 NLCC). Lakes, in the midst of a four-game road trip, heads to North Chicago (0-3, 0-1) Friday.
Cristian Castro completed 12 of 31 passes for 184 yards and 1 touchdown for the Panthers, while Jamariel Brown had 3 catches for 91 yards and a touchdown. Marco Jimenez made 17 tackles, including 1 tackle for loss.
Round Lake coach Scott Blecha also was impressed with Anthony Bishop's play on defense. "Anthony stood out by stepping up from the safety spot and filling well on the run," he said.
Bishop finished with 11 tackles.
Adrian Montelongo also had a strong game on the offensive line, "giving Cristian time to throw the ball," Blecha pointed out.
Round Lake heads down the street Friday to face Grant in NLCC action in Fox Lake.
"We gave up too many big plays on defense and did not do what we needed to do to stop the run," Blecha said of the Lakes game. "We need to do a better job of breaking down and finishing tackles. Offensively, we need to get back to a balanced attack by being able to run the ball (Round Lake had 64 rushing yards against Lakes), and we missed a lot of opportunities with dropped passes."
Mundelein 48, Waukegan 21:
The Mustangs opened North Suburban Conference action with this 27-point win in Waukegan. Mundelein improved to 2-1 overall.
Mustangs coach Vince DeFrancesco noted one key for the Mustangs in the early going has been the play of Omari Rhinehart, who was leading the team in touchdowns heading into the Waukegan game. "Omari has been outstanding so far," he said earlier last week. "Anytime the ball is in his hands, he has an opportunity to score. He plays with relentless effort on every snap and has been outstanding on defense and special teams. He's one of our leading tacklers on defense, as well. Omari is a special athlete that I personally think can be a high-level college football player. He is mature, has a great work ethic and is an outstanding athlete. He's a special player and I absolutely love coaching him."
Carmel 35, Chicago Leo 32:
The Corsairs moved to 2-1 overall after this win against Leo in Mundelein. Carmel led 14-6 after the first quarter and 21-20 at halftime. The Corsairs scored at least one touchdown in every quarter.
Carmel opens Chicago Catholic League/East Suburban Catholic Conference Purple Division play against St. Viator at home Friday.
