Hermosillo's season over; Cubs recall Martini

Before Wednesday's game, the Cubs placed outfielder Michael Hermosillo on the injured list with a right forearm strain and promoted Crystal Lake native Nick Martini from Iowa.

Martini, 31, was with the Cubs earlier this season and appeared in 12 games. The Prairie Ridge High School grad hit .267 in Iowa this season with 11 home runs. It was his first big-league action since 2019 with the Padres.

Hermosillo played well in Iowa and the Cubs were anxious to get a look at him in the majors, but he injured his forearm on a slide into home plate a few days ago. An Ottawa, Ill. native, Hermosillo hit .194 in 16 games with the Cubs.

Substitute manager Andy Green said Hermosillo's injury will take a few weeks to heal, so he's effectively done for the season.

"It's really unfortunate because he'd been doing a lot of really good things for us," Green said. "He seemed to be just finding his groove. I know (manager David) Rossy was eager to see him play the rest of the year. He probably would have had a couple more starts."

Hermosillo, who has previous major-league experience with the Angels, pinch-ran late in Tuesday's 4-3 loss.

"It stinks. There's really no other words around it," Green said. "It's also part of his story. He's still got every opportunity to write a great story with his baseball career. I know everybody in this clubhouse has enjoyed him and seen real viability in him as a roster piece going forward."
