Girls soccer: Grayslake North blanks Antioch

Kaylee McCaslen is getting used to being on the soccer field for her first time with the Grayslake North varsity team.

She had a part of all 4 Grayslake North goals with a goal and 3 assists as the Knights shut out host Antioch 4-0 in the Northern Lake County Conference opener on Wednesday night.

"Getting the assist is the person that helps support the goal-makers," McCaslen said. "It's one of the most important pieces. It's just as important as a goal. Without them there wouldn't be the passes to set them up."

McCaslen worked hard for her senior season and believes she can contribute with the rest of the Knights (3-0, 1-0).

"I wanted to fit this all in being my last season," McCaslen said. "I missed my chances on varsity my first two years. I worked hard over the summer and I was training so many hours. I wanted to make this season memorable."

McCaslen scored the opening goal in the 14th minute off an assist from Willow Silverman. Then, less than a minute later, McCaslen assisted on Morgan Flynn's goal.

Flynn added her second goal in the 25th minute as McCaslen set her up for a 3-0 Grayslake North advantage.

Emma Dusek added the other goal in the second half from McCaslen's third assist.

"Our team is still trying to figure things out," Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "We've had a good build up to the season. Most of the them are soccer players and they didn't come from other sports. Only three games in, it's all new. We're seeing that some of them are having their moments. Some have some uncertainty and some are starting to get comfortable. It's fun and they're a good group."

Antioch (1-4-1, 0-1) has a group of players that have some experience and some younger players trying to put things together.

"It's great to be out here playing," Antioch coach Jim Silasiri said "We have a good group of young players and freshmen. We have a good group of leaders that are seniors too. They do a nice job passing on what they've learned. There's still a lot of work to do. We still need the continuity and that will take some time to get on the ball. I expect them to continue to jell and work together."
