COVID 19 cancels season-high 12 area football games

Friday became a whirlwind of activity for a few suburban athletic directors.

At least 12 high school football games scheduled for the final week of the six-week IHSA spring season have been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. That number marks the most in one week in the Daily Herald area since the season began on March 19.

There were last-minute changes on Friday as St. Charles East, Glenbrook South and McHenry each had to cancel their games due to COVID-related issues, adding to games that had already been canceled.

The affected Week 6 games include:

•Burlington Central at McHenry

•Cary-Grove at Huntley.

•Grayslake Central at Grayslake North.

•New Trier at St. Charles East, which was a replacement game for the canceled St. Charles East at Lake Park contest.

•Glenbrook South at Maine West

•Prairie Ridge at Jacobs.

•Proviso West at York.

•Vernon Hills at Niles North.

•West Aurora at Oswego East.

•Willowbrook at Proviso East.

Cary-Grove, Grayslake North, New Trier, Maine West, Prairie Ridge, York, Vernon Hills, West Aurora and Willowbrook, all without COVID issues, were all able to find replacement games. Burlington Central has not.

The Week 6 cancellations bring the total of cancelled games to at least 47 for the season.
