Nick Williams joins White Sox after Hamilton lands on IL

Billy Hamilton joined Tim Anderson on the injury list Thursday, and the veteran outfielder is going to be sidelined until at least April 18.

Like Anderson, Hamilton is dealing with a strained left hamstring. He had to leave Wednesday's game at Seattle in the fifth inning with the injury.

Nick Williams had his contract purchased from the Schaumburg training facility and he was the White Sox's starting left fielder in the home opener.

The 27-year-old Williams signed with the Sox as a minor-league free agent on Jan. 12. In 24 Cactus League games, he hit .300 with 1 home run and 2 RBI.

"Nick had a great spring," manager Tony La Russa said. "That's the old thing where I believe if a guy joins a club, get him out there if there's a legitimate spot."

Playing for the Phillies from 2017-19, Williams hit .254 with 31 home runs and 110 RBI in 290 games. The left-hander had 17 homers and 50 RBI in 2018.

La Russa said rookie Andrew Vaughn will be back in the starting lineup in left field on Saturday. Vaughn is off to a 2-for-13 start at the plate.

"Right now, he's not in the core where it's Tim (Anderson), Jose (Abreu), Yoan (Moncada), (Yasmani) Grandal, guys like that, Adam (Eaton)," La Russa said. "But he's playing enough."
