Sox shortstop Anderson lands on 10-day IL with hamstring injury

After Tim Anderson exited Sunday night's game against the Angels with a strained left hamstring, the early hope was having the star shortstop back in the lineup for Thursday's home opener.

That won't be happening after the White Sox placed Anderson on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 5) on Wednesday. He'll be eligible to return next Thursday.

"Tomorrow was not going to be realistic," Sox manager Tony La Russa said. "The risk of bringing him back before he's 100 percent ready and then losing him for who knows how long, it was not worth it. You put it together and this is April and we've got five-plus months to play. He is improving, he feels better and we're very confident that when the (IL) period is over a week from tomorrow, he'll be ready to go."

Anderson injured the hamstring running to first base. Danny Mendick started at shortstop against the Mariners Wednesday after being recalled from the Schaumburg training facility.
