Dundee-Crown rebounds against St. Charles East
Gianine Boado tore her ACL six games into the 2019-2020 season and missed Dundee-Crown's run to the Class 4A supersectional.
With the pandemic threatening high school sports in Illinois, Boado's senior season seemed in jeopardy.
Boado is ecstatic to be playing her final campaign as a Charger.
Scoring 17 points with a 3-pointer, Boado propelled D-C to a 47-29 nonconference win over St. Charles East Wednesday night in Carpentersville.
"I am so happy to be playing on the court again," said Boado. "I wasn't sure there was going to be a season. I worked hard in the summer and feel great right now. I am 100 percent."
Boado, who was 10-of-11 from the free-throw line, grabbed 5 rebounds with 3 assists and 2 steals.
"I am super happy for Gianine," said D-C coach Sarah Teipel. "I am happy she gets to play her senior season. She is a senior captain and gets to play with Alyssa (Crenshaw) her senior season."
After a 3-pointer from St. Charles East's Emma Yakey, the Saints pulled within 15-13 with 2:28 left in the first half.
That would be the last points St. Charles East would score in nearly seven minutes.
The Chargers (4-4) ended the first half on a 9-0 run aided by 5 points from Crenshaw to lead 24-13 at intermission.
D-C tallied the first 6 points of the third quarter, 5 by Crenshaw, to complete a 15-0 run. After a putback by Crenshaw, the Chargers led 30-13 with 4:55 left in the quarter.
The Saints (3-4), playing without starters Victoria Korton and Alexis Mardis, broke the scoring drought. A layup by Sophia Lori with 3:18 remaining in the quarter made the score 30-15.
"Things just snowballed," said St. Charles East coach Mike Murphy. "We missed some open perimeter shots and layups. We were short-handed and certainly missed Victoria and Alexis."
Crenshaw backed Boado with 11 points and 8 rebounds.
"This is a good bounce back win for us," said Teipel whose team lost to Cary-Grove Tuesday. "Our defense is our identity. We played with great energy."
The Saints, 5-of-26 from 3-point range for 19 percent, were led by Yakey and Alexis Diorio with 9 points.
