After trying month, DePaul ready to take the court

After nine games have been either canceled or postponed because of COVID protocols, DePaul is scheduled to play its first game Wednesday night against Western Illinois.

Finally.

Hopefully.

No team in the country has been affected by the pandemic like the Blue Demons. While many others are approaching double digit games, DePaul is 0-0.

Originally scheduled to open the season Nov. 25 against Western (2-4), DePaul had to postpone because of protocols in its program. And the Blue Demons have had to do that again and again since, in a month that's wearing on everyone.

"With our team we've been through a lot," coach Dave Leitao said.

DePaul still won't be at full strength Wednesday. Leitao didn't name specific players who are out.

The Blue Demons have come close to returning a couple times, including a Dec. 6 game at Iowa State. They were on the court for a shootaround when the cancellation was announced less than an hour before tip.

Leitao used the analogy of a groom in a tuxedo showing up to his wedding only to find his bride's not there.

"It's not exactly equal but you have to pick yourself up and continue with life," Leitao said. "There's a natural letdown. Did players and staff have a letdown? Absolutely. And we've had more than one. It does take a toll on you emotionally. As I tell the guys every day what doesn't break you makes you stronger."

Practices have been a challenge as well. Leitao said he's had his complete roster for approximately six of 35 practices.

"We haven't had as much continuity as you would need to have a strong foundation," Leitao said. "It's an explanation, it's not an excuse, and we are going to use it as motivation to be better."

DePaul's Director of Athletics DeWayne Peevy, just 100 days into the job, has been busy scheduling and rescheduling games. He said the goal is to play 25 games, and while that might be difficult, he does want to complete the Big East schedule. He's still trying to add games.

Peevy said there was never a thought to cancel or postpone the season. While he can't go into specifics of how many players have gotten COVID, he is convinced it's safe to start playing.

"With HIPPA laws I can't tell you a lot of information but what I can tell you is we haven't had a situation with an outbreak or several problems or forecast future problems," Peevy said. "We were dealing with very isolated issues that happened at the worst time possible. There's no higher risks, no safety issues."

Peevy watched the Blue Demons return to practice Monday and liked the energy level. He's trying to put a positive spin on what's been a most difficult situation.

"The kids are ready to get the first game in," Peevy said. "They are ready to get this thing started. Every goal we had at the beginning of the year is still out there in front of us. We want to maximize the opportunities we have going forward."

After nine games have been postponed or canceled, DePaul coach Dave Leitao is hoping the Blue Demons finally get their season started Wednesday against Western Illinois. Associated Press
