Cross country: Benet girls nab sectional crown

Benet's girls cross country team put five runners in the top 10, including claiming the 4-7 spots Saturday to win the team championship at the Class 2A Chicago Latin sectional.

The Redwings scored 32 points to Latin's 40.

Louisa Diamond finished fourth overall for Benet in 17:52.68, while her teammates Kelly Andrews, Elizabeth Camic and Joy Jackson were 5-7. Amelia Parisi was 10th.

Latin's Ava Parekh won the race in a time of 16:44.32.

Hinsdale South's JulianWatson won the boys' race in 15:21.25. Benet's Niklas Anderson was second in 15:28.94.

St. Ignatius won the team title with 62 points. St. Francis was second with 89, Benet third with 105 and Glenbard South fifth with 116.

Michael Schumacher of St. Viator was fourth. Luke Orwig took sixth to lead St. Francis and Gabe Alcala ninth to pace Glenbard South.

Class 1A

Rosary's Lianna Surtz was the girls' champ at the Class 1A Harvest Christian sectional in a time of 19:07.30.

Julia Wolke of Christian Liberty came in second and IC Catholic Prep's Carly Manchester was third.

Rosary won the team tile with 37 points, while ICCP was second with 42 and Wheaton Academy third with 112.

In the boys' race, Harvest Christian's Matthew Olech was second to lead the Lions to the team title with 62 points. Hayden Colclasure was fourth for Harvest and Daniel Winkelman finished fifth.
