Chicago White Sox place Engel on IL, awaiting test results

Given the coronavirus outbreaks that have decimated major-league teams such as the Marlins and Cardinals this season, the news regarding White Sox outfielder Adam Engel raised a red flag.

"With regards to Adam, he has given the organization permission to share that he has not tested positive for COVID," Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Monday. "However, we have reason to be concerned that he may have come in contact with someone who was infected and as a result he is being isolated and will return once further testing is complete."

Apparently, Engel contacted Hahn late Sunday night.

"I've learned that no good phone calls come in after 11 p.m., especially this season," the White Sox's GM said.

Unlike Miami and St. Louis, which had to postpone games after the coronavirus spread throughout the roster, the Sox are confident they are still working in a safe environment.

"Major League Baseball was obviously involved, as were our doctors," Hahn said. "The experts have all determined that there fortunately are no additional risks to anyone associated with the club at this time."

Hahn stressed that Engel has not tested positive and could be back with the White Sox in sooner than 10 days after being placed on the injured list.

"However, there is a chance, given that we believe he has come in contact with someone, not associated with major-league baseball, that he needs to be isolated from the group for the time being," Hahn said.

A pleasant surprise for the Sox this season, Engel is hitting .263/.317/.500 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI in 14 games.

Luis Gonzalez is replacing Engel after his contract was purchased from Schaumburg.
