The Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Foundation has announced its 2020 scholarship recipients.

The ESHOF board has awarded $1,700 scholarships to 30 student-athletes who either go to school in Elgin or live in Elgin and attend school elsewhere.

The recipients are: Anthony Farmer and Reili Gardner of Burlington Central; Christian Rodriguez of Elgin Academy; Xavier Bonds, Jaret Godinez, Bethsaida Rodriguez Guerrero, Melinda Levandowski, Brian Rea and Margaretha Troyke of Elgin High; Lydia Camp, Madelyn Martin, Madison Pfister and Erik Richter of Harvest Christian Academy; Angelo Butcher, Amy Jane Leon, Ashley Miller, Zachary Miller, Jashon Neals and Miranda Preuss of Larkin; Tristan Cruz and Sophia Salazar of South Elgin; Chase Brieger, Madeline Ellsworth, Joshua Johansen, Rachel Martini and Evan Sajtar of St. Edward; Sophie Kovachevich and Frank Schlaffer of Westminster Christian; and Mariel Franco and Trevon Montgomery of Elgin Community College.

"Over the past 39 years the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Foundation has awarded over $635,000 in scholarships to student athletes," said former Elgin boys basketball coach Jim Harrington, vice president of the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame. "This year, even though the COVID-19 pandemic is going on, due to the generosity of our donors we were able to award $51,000 worth of scholarships to 28 high school seniors and two Elgin Community College student-athletes who are moving on to a four-year college.

"On behalf of the board of directors, we wish each and every one of these seniors the best of luck in all their future endeavors."

The scholarship money is raised through ESHOF membership fees and the annual ESHOF golf outing at Elgin Country Club.

The 2020 golf outing is tentatively scheduled for September 14.
