Top basketball players of the century: Girls No. 4, Angela Dugalic of Maine West

The Daily Herald is counting down the Top Ten boys and girls basketball players of the century in our coverage area. We continue today with No. 4 - Cam Krutwig of Jacobs and Angela Dugalic of Maine West.

Kim de Marigny took over as Maine West's girls basketball coach four years ago.

That was the same year a freshman by the name of Angela Dugalic took over as one of the area's most dominating players since the girls sport began in Illinois in 1973.

And it wasn't all that much of a surprise to de Marigny.

"She was a gym rat in the summer always working at her game," de Marigny said. "Of course, we had our eyes on her. She was probably already 6 feet tall, and 110 pounds soaking wet."

Dugalic grew to be 6-foot-4 and her game grew even bigger.

Division I schools from across the nation were in heavy pursuit before Dugalic chose 2019 Final Four women's basketball powerhouse Oregon.

Dugalic made the Sweet 16 in all four seasons of her storied career which led to being named Illinois' only McDonald's All-American this season.

As a junior, she helped lead the Warriors to a 35-0 Class 4A state championship season, the same record Maine West posted when it won the 1988 Class AA state crown under coach Derril Kipp.

While becoming the second all-time leading scorer behind Brittany Collins (2,055), Dugalic also helped the Warriors to a third-place finish in 2018 and two supersectional other appearances.

Playing in a school-record 135 games, Dugalic finished with 1,782 career points, 1,067 rebounds, 285 steals, 237 assists and 150 blocked shots.

And there's more to Dugalic than her basketball game.

She created and designed logos, T-shirt and artwork for Maine West teams and volunteered locally for Feed My Starving Children and Operation Christmas Child while maintaining a 3.40 GPA.

Fremd coach Dave Yates, whose team encountered one of its closest calls to Maine West in this year's state title run, had high praise for the Warriors' standout.

"You don't stop her with one kid," said Yates, who like so many opposing coaches made Dugalic the center of attention.

"She is a tremendous player," de Marigny said. "But an even better person - just the complete package of athlete and individual."
