MLB owners, players in agreement on several key points - should 2020 season happen

Everywhere you look, there are many more questions than answers.

On that front, baseball is trying to provide some clarity as they look ahead to what might be the 2020 major-league season.

Owners and the Major League Players Association are working together to be ready to play ball as soon as possible, and the two sides have reportedly agreed on an early framework.

First, owners and players want as many games as possible on the other side of the coronavirus pandemic, and the regular season is likely to stretch through October. Doubleheaders are also likely.

That means the playoffs would be played in November, with warm weather cities serving as hosts a real possibility. The postseason could also feature 14 teams, up from the usual 10.

Here are some other highlights from the agreement:

•In a big win for the union, players will receive the same service time this year as 2019, even if there is no season. If there is a season of any length, players get credit for a full year.

•According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, games will be played when there are no longer any bans on mass gatherings, there are no relevant travel restrictions in the United States or Canada and medical experts determine playing games would not present health risks for players, fans or other team personnel.

There might be some flexibility on the first point, with games possibly being played in front of no fans.

•Players are reportedly getting a $170 million advance spread over two months. Salaries will be prorated if a season is able to be played.

•The draft could be shortened to five rounds.

•In order to play as many games as possible if there is a season, the All-Star Game is not likely to be held.

•The White Sox-Yankees "Field of Dreams" game in Iowa, scheduled for Aug. 13, is still on the table. Also the Cubs-Cardinals June 13-14 series to be played in London has been canceled. The two teams are expected to play in London next year.
