Is it fair to be focused on football right now?

I understand that almost every one of you follow me to learn about and talk football and most often the Chicago Bears.

I can't tell you all how much I appreciate that!

But I'm afraid today I'm just not feeling it.

There is a little football coming but please bare with me on a short road to get there.

Certainly none of you needs enlightenment from me about what's going on around us, and while I'm sure we are each processing things in our own ways, uncertainty, doubts, anger and yes, fear are everywhere and at times can feel suffocating.

I am older than most of you, and in my entire lifetime we have never faced a more daunting public health challenge.

When you pile on top of it possibly the worst threat to our economy since the Great Depression, if you're not scared you're probably not human.

But you know what? If history has taught us anything we are going to survive this and come out stronger on the other side.

The question of course is how are we going to get there, and that is what has me unable to keep both eyes on the gridiron.

It feels like everywhere we turn the narrative is what is Washington, what are our leaders, what are our bosses, what are our institutions going to do for us?

I get it and I have my own strong feelings about our leaders and institutions, but our political divides and partisanship have absolutely nothing to offer us right now.

Throughout the history of America, the best and brightest of our leaders have always stood tall and we have to believe they will again in the coming days.

But what am I, what are you doing to lead?

What can each of us do for each other?

If it sounds like I'm stealing from JFK, so be it, the man had a point.

The reason our doctors and scientists are begging us to focus on hygiene, social distancing and if at all possible to just hunker down at home is in large part because it is the best thing we can do to protect ourselves and even more importantly, it's the best thing we can do to protect each other.

And there is so much more. How many of you have reached out to a family member, friend, neighbor or co-worker just to see how they're doing, offer comfort, hope and even an errand or favor if they are in need and you have the means?

There are tons of ways to help folks from 6 feet or further away.

Do you know someone who's alone; couples without the family or social reach you have or perhaps not quite the financial resources? They need you right now, possibly more desperately than we know.

Alone we will continue to struggle but together, even in these times of incredible turmoil we can begin to flourish again right now.

That choice is ours.

Which brings me at least close to football.

Have the NFL, Arthur and I, and our friends and peers who cover the game done the right thing these last few days by trying to bring you business as usual?

I think we have if for no other reason than to offer temporary breaks from our painful reality and reminders of how entertaining in normal times our favorite sport can be, and will be again.

But here's the thing. I don't know if Ryan Pace is a great general manager, Matt Nagy a great coach, Mitch Trubisky a great quarterback, Nick Foles a great trade, etc.?

All I can do is report the facts and let you each make up your own minds.

But I do know they are all good people and for those of you, and I know it's the minority but there are plenty of you out there who claim the right to treat them like punching bags for failing to always deliver your dreams, today they are all struggling in the exact same ways as the rest of us.

So how about if we save the boos till they're back on the field and offer them all the same care and concern we all owe each other?

I don't mean to preach guys and from the bottom of my heart, I do thank you for listening.
