Scouting the CSL Championship game: Maine West at Evanston

The credentials of the Maine West and Evanston girls basketball teams speak for themselves.

West is No. 3 in Class 4A and top-seeded in its own sectional.

Evanston ranks No. 7 in the state and No. 2 in West's sectional.

Now the two state powerhouses will do their talking on the court.

The inaugural Central Suburban League championship will be held in Evanston on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The South champion Wildkits (21-5, 10-0) are coming off a 75-71 double overtime loss to Class 4A No. 1 Benet.

The North champion Warriors (25-3, 10-0) were most recently impressive 59-42 winners over state-ranked Fremd, a No. 3 sectional seed.

Warriors coach Kim de Marigny is quite familiar with the Wildkits.

Just last winter, her Warriors stopped Evanston in the supersectional en route to win the Class 4A state crown.

"Everything concerns me about Evanston," de Marigny said. "We just need to maintain our composure, play our game and not let them dictate the tempo. We have to play good team defense and execute."

McDonald's All-American Angela Dugalic, who collected her 1,000th career rebound against Fremd, leads the Warriors, a team that has been to the state finals the last two years.

She was joined in the starting lineup last Saturday by senior standout guard Dylan Van Fleet, senior Brianna Hernandez, junior Jane Rothweiler and freshman Jaclyn Riedl.

Senior point guard Lena Albo has recently been sidelined by a sprained ankle suffered 12 days ago against Highland Park.

"I like the idea of this game," said de Maringy about the new championship game in the CSL. "But I guess it adds a little more pressure. Now this is the way you end your season. And Evanston is a great club. We have our work cut out for us for sure."
