Hersey, Fremd will meet for MSL title
It's official.
With its 69-44 win at Wheeling on Tuesday night, Hersey's girls basketball won its third Mid-Suburban East crown in four years under coach Mary Fendley.
The Class 4A state-ranked Huskies will visit Fremd (also receiving votes) a week from Wednesday to play for the MSL title.
The Vikings had clinched their 10th West crown in 11 years last Friday night with a win over Barrington.
Mary Kate Fahey (21 points), Mary McGrath (20) and Katy Eidle (12) led the Huskies (24-6, 9-1) to their 13th straight win while Chloe Drozdz (21 points) and Morgan Collar (10) paced Wheeling (4-24, 0-10).
Fremd 57, Hoffman Estates 8: Fremd (21-6, 9-0) celebrated its Senior Night by getting to within one win of back-to-back perfect seasons in the MSL West with the win over Hoffman Estates (2-23, 0-10).
Olivia Hill (9) points and Eleanor Klink (7) led Fremd as the Vikings' staff recognized 12 seniors (11 players and one manager).
"This is the largest senior group I've had," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "This group has been a pleasure to coach. These young ladies represent our school on the court, in the classroom and in the community in a very impressive fashion. It was very fun to finally honor this group."
Buffalo Grove 44, Rolling Meadows 24: After a sluggish start in which the host Bison trailed 17-15 at half, they outscored the Mustangs 29-7 in the final 16 minutes to earn a co-championship for the MSL East title.
The Bison (16-9, 9-1) were led by Macy Floro (16 points) and Kendra Lee (12). Freshman Kora Kipley added right.
"Kendra Lee is so willing to do whatever it takes for us to win," said Bison coach Steve Kolodziej. "She is incredibly selfless. This was a huge effort for us."
Meadows (12-10, 4-5) was led by Susannah Holifield's 8 points.
Barrington 52; Schaumburg 42: MSL West runner-up Barrington (18-9, 8-2) was led by Sophie Swanson 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 assists).
"We started out a little slow, "said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "I believe we missed our first 10 shots of the game.
"But I thought the kids were pretty patient most of the night and worked for good looks. Overall, I really liked the balance in the score book."
The visiting Saxons (9-17, 3-7) were led by Talia Torosian (14 points), Alyssa Orozco (12) and Emma Raupp (10).
Elk Grove 42, Prospect 31: Visiting Elk Grove got rolling in second half to beak a 17-17 tie and get the MSL East win that raised its record to 16-10 and 4-6. Prospect is 11-11 and 3-6.
Maine West 60, St. Francis 28: Maine West, ranked No. 3 in the state, improved to 23-3 with the nonconference road win in Wheaton.
Angela Dugalic (20 points, 16 rebounds, 4 steals), Dylan Van Fleet (16 points, 6 steals, 6 assists) and Jane Rothweiler (8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals) led the Warriors.
Maine South 67, Trinity 49: Niamh Gardiner (14 points), Nicole Gardiner (10), Caroline Barker (9) and Niki Manolis (9) led Maine South (23-5) in the nonconference win.
Christian Liberty 52, North Shore Country Day 44: The host Chargers (25-) won a school-record 24th straight game behind Julia Wolke (16 points), Megan Ng (12), Audrey Law (8) and Melissa Castro (8) in a nonconference game.
