Vernon Hills wins on Senior Night; Lake Zurich's Soukup scores 36

Abby Brown led a balanced attack with 9 points, and Vernon Hills' girls basketball team celebrated Senior Night by beating visiting Maine East 44-30 in Central Suburban League North Division action on Friday.

Vernon Hills (13-8, 6-2) honored seniors Brown, Lily Blase, Kylie Bunning, Laine Lutgens, Lauren Shores, Emily Singer, Olivia Sweeney and Brynn Ziemke.

It was the fourth win in a row for the Cougars.

"This has been a school-record 8 seniors this season," Vernon Hills coach Paul Brettner said. "What a wonderful group. If my daughter ends up like any one of them, I would be ecstatic."

Lake Zurich 57, Waukegan 54: Alayna Soukup scored a career-high 36 points, and the visiting Bears pulled out a tough one in North Suburban Conference action.

Freshman Brooke Wahlund added 10 points for Lake Zurich (12-7, 6-2).

Warren 45, Mundelein 38: Macy Kocen scored 16 points to lead the visiting Blue Devils to the North Suburban Conference win.

Caroline Sharpe and Grace Lynch each had 9 points for Warren (8-16, 2-7), which snapped a six-game losing streak.

Morgan Frank had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Mundelein (4-18, 1-8). Allison Binz scored 10 points for the Mustangs.

Wauconda 54, Grayslake North 45: Ella Karg had 20 points and 9 assists, and the host Bulldogs used a big fourth quarter to avoid an upset in the Northern Lake County Conference game.

Kiley Szmajda added 17 points and 5 blocked shots for Wauconda (14-5, 7-2), which trailed 38-37 after three quarters. The Bulldogs outscored the visitors 17-7 in the fourth.

"We were not at our best tonight," Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis said. "After three tight quarters, we finally stepped up and played more aggressively on offense and defense in the fourth to secure the win. Grayslake was tough. They came ready to play. Fortunately, we found a way to win tonight. We will take it and be better tomorrow."

Mackenzie Arden contributed 11 points, 4 assists and 4 steals for Wauconda.

Grayslake North (8-14, 3-6) was led by Peyton Gerdes' 13 points. Faith Standerski and Jayden Curtis each had 8 points for the Knights.
