Carmel soars at county with season-best 146.4

Carmel Catholic's girls gymnastics team looks like it might be ready for the state series.

The Corsairs shined in the Lake County invitational at Stevenson on Saturday, posting a season-high 146.4 to win the championship. Lake Zurich's 143.85 was good for second place, while Mundelein (141.95) took third ahead of Stevenson (140.675). The rest of the field included Barrington (138.00), Libertyville (136.45), Lake Forest (134.50), Vernon Hills (134.25), Deerfield (132.55) and Warren (131.80).

"I thought we had a pretty solid meet," Carmel coach Sarah Mikrut Doyle said. "We have room for improvement. We struggled on beam and expect it to be cleaned up. We also had a couple of falls on floor. Still, overall, it was a pretty good day."

Carmel took three of the top four spots in the all-around. Claire Keane won it with a 37.55, Izzy Kropiwiec was the runner-up with a 37.25, and Lyndsey Basara was fourth with a 36.15. Libertyville's Anna Becker (37.05) and Vernon Hills' Becca Tran (35.925) were third and fifth, respectively.

Basara was first on vault (9.65) and tied for second on bars (9.4) with Lake Zurich's Kayla Bailey. Keane chalked up the top score on bars (9.65), was second on beam (9.3) and tied for fifth with Mundelein's Emma Hallin and Warren's Olivia Kaether on floor (9.45). Kropiwiec was third on beam (9.25) and tied for fourth on bars (9.35) with Lake Zurich's Grace Lacrosse.

Bailey was second on floor (9.5) and placed fifth on beam (9.0). Her Bears teammate Kelsey Rothas placed fourth on floor (9.4).

Lake Zurich posted its best score of the season.

"The girls had an awesome meet," Bears coach Chelsie Groteleuschen said. "They want to be better and they are adding more skills. We didn't finish the way we wanted to. We can be better on the beam and be a better beam team than we finished."

Lake Forest's Reagan Fisch had the best floor routine with a 9.6. Becker was third and Ally Gitler was fifth (9.375).

On vault, Barrington's Brooke Husby took second (9.6), Stevenson's Emily Weinstein placed third (9.5) and Tran was fourth (9.475).

Mundelein's Emily Weiss placed fourth on beam (9.2).
