Carmel can't quite solve Marist

Carmel Catholic's Katie Lach joined the 1,000-point club on December 8, 2019.

On Wednesday night, the school recognized her accomplishment with game ball before the Corsairs' girls basketball home opener.

The senior contributed with seven more points and raised her point total to 1,080, while freshman Jordan Wood led with a game-high 13 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

Carmel was in it down to the final minute but Marist downed the Corsairs 34-30 in an East Suburban Catholic Conference matchup in Mundelein.

"It's really a great opportunity doing it in front a big crowd here tonight in front all of my friends that have supported me throughout the years," Lach said. "Going from freshman year to now was a great progression, which was great to see.

"Marist has been an amazing team (to play) every single year. I think this game, we put all our effort in and it is what it is."

Carmel (13-4, 2-2) had been on the road all season until the Corsairs finally had a home game on Wednesday night.

The Corsairs were down 23-11 at the halftime break and rallied to trail 32-30 in the final minute of the fourth quarter, but they couldn't get a shot to tie or take the lead.

"It's been a long time away," Carmel coach Ben Berg said.

"I was very proud of the girls with the way they played in the second half. I thought we played with a lot of effort and a sense of purpose. We just needed a few more shots and to take care of the ball a little bit more. Still proud of how our girls played in the second half. (Marist) was a really good team and how they play and what they do."

Marist (18-3, 2-1), ranked No. 6 in the latest Associated Press poll in Class 4A, had its hands full all the way down to the end of the game.

"Carmel played a lot of pressure on our guards at the end," Marist coach Mary Pat Connolly said. "We kind of played in crazy mode with our passing and turnovers. (Carmel) does a great job with their pressure. Then they have bigs inside that we couldn't match up with. We were just lucky to get out of here with a win."

Kira Chivers led Marist with a game-high 13 points and hit a couple of key 3-pointers late."
