Linbo, Grant rally past Wauconda

Jazzlyn Linbo led all scorers with 21 points, and Grant's girls basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to edge Wauconda 55-54 in a Northern Lake County Conference opener on Tuesday night.

MaCalyn Flores added 15 points for Grant, which outscored Wauconda 18-10 in the fourth quarter after trailing 44-37 after three.

Mackenzie Arden had 20 points for Wauconda, which also received 16 points from Ella Karg. Kiley Szmajda had 10 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.

"We had some moments of great basketball and moments of mistake-filled basketball," Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis said. "We made too many mistakes on offense and defense in the last 2 minutes to overcome. Grant capitalized on those mistakes. In a one-point loss you can point to a lot of things that could have changed things: a turnover, a missed free throw, a missed 'D' assignment, an ill-advised shot, missed boxout, etc. Not the way we wanted to start conference play and need to work on our consistency."

Grayslake Central 52, Grayslake North 36: Piper Gallaher scored 11 points to lead a balanced attack, as the Rams won the Northern Lake County Conference opener.

Amanda Kocialkowski and Kate Bullman added 10 and 9 points, respectively, for Grayslake Central.

Freshman Peyton Gerdes scored 12 points for Grayslake North.

Stevenson 56, Warren 34: Ava Bardic scored a game-high 17 points, Avery King added 15, and the Patriots won the North Suburban Conference opener to move to 6-1.

Kelsey McGraw scored 13 points for Warren.

Lake Zurich 50, Mundelein 37: Ella Gilbertson scored 17 points, Alayna Soukup added 15, and the Bears captured the North Suburban Conference opener.

Morgan Frank had 19 points to lead Mundelein.

Maine West 59, Vernon Hills 31: Daniella Jarrell scored 12 points and Brynn Ziemke had 6 for the Cougars (2-4), who lost their Central Suburban League North Division opener.
