Boys soccer: Vernon Hills nets regional title

Valdemar Nambo scored in the first half, Carlos Chaires added an insurance tally in the second, and Vernon Hills' boys soccer team shutout Deerfield 2-0 in the Class 2A Deerfield regional final on Saturday.

Keven Martinez made 7 saves in earning the shutout for the Cougars (11-8-2), who advanced to the Belvidere sectional and will play their semifinal match at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Boylan Catholic.

Carlos Aguilar and Nick Jahen had assists.

"On days like today when it is wet, it is often the team who wants it the most who comes out on top," Vernon Hills coach Mike McCaulou. "We did not necessarily play the way we wanted to play today, but when we tried to do the right thing, we scored two goals. Always nice to bring home some postseason hardware, but we have been hoping for bigger things since the beginning of the season. Great win by the boys."
