Girls tennis: St. Viator's Nowicki wins sectional singles title

While St. Viator's girls tennis team had to settle for a tie with the host school for the team championship at the Class 1A Vernon Hills sectional Saturday, the Lions did come away with the tournament's singles champ.

Freshman Maia Nowicki defeated Regina's Laura Strenk 6-2, 7-5 to win the title and take a high seed into next week's state tournament, which begins Thursday on the 12 courts of the Mid-Suburban League schools.

The Lions also took second place at doubles, where senior Tess McLaughlin and junior Sarah Schultz lost to Elgin Academy's Ashley Gordon/ Noelle Lofton in the title match 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.

Class 2A at Glenbrook South: Elk Grove sophomore Peyton Oda advanced to state with a second-place finish in singles, falling to Glenbrook South's Vanessa Vaisanen 6-3, 6-0 in the final match. Also advancing was the Maine South doubles team of senior Regina Lee and sophomore Molly Grace, who finished fourth.
