Girls golf: Great start at state for Stevenson, Vernon Hills' Schulman

It was a great day for Lake County girls golfers in the Class 2A state tournament at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur on Friday.

Led by freshman Allie Santos' 2-over 74, Stevenson carded a 303 (15 over) and sits in second place heading into Saturday, one shot behind Barrington, while Vernon Hills freshman Lexi Schulman is tied for the lead after firing a 1-over 73.

While Santos (3 birdies, 5 bogeys) and two others, including Barrington senior Caroline Smith, are tied for third, Stevenson sophomore Emily Duan and junior Sophia Zhuang are tied for sixth after each shot a 3-over 75. The Patriots, who had the best sectional score (298), received 79s from senior Joyce Bai, junior Kelly Dong and junior Faith Wang, all of whom are tied for 25th.

Schulman shares the first-round lead with Glenbrook South junior Maria Perakis. Both golfers carded a 37 on the front nine and a 36 on the back nine. Schulman had 2 birdies and 3 bogeys.

Besides Smith's 74, Barrington counted 76s from sophomore Sophia Sulkar, senior Samantha Saile and sophomore Mara Janess, all of whom are tied for 11th.

Lake Zurich junior Bryana Hogan, who's the first female golfer from her school to qualify for state, shot an 83 and is tied for 55th.
