Boys golf: Carmel in second place after first day at state

Carmel Catholic junior Clint Bailes shot an even-par 71, helping the Corsairs post the second-best team score on the first day of the Class 2A state tournament at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in Normal on Friday.

Carmel carded a 300, three strokes behind Peoria Notre Dame heading into Saturday. The Corsairs also counted the rounds of senior Michael Wattelet (75, tied for 19th), junior Ryan Hogan (75, tied for 19th) and senior Justin McKenna (79, tied for 43rd). Bailes, competing at state for the first time, had 5 birdies and 5 bogeys. He's tied for seventh, 6 shots behind leader Alex McCulla of Quincy Notre Dame. McCulla fired a 2-under 69.

Vernon Hills senior Rohan Vasudeva shot an 86 (tied for 88th).

In Class 3A, at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington, Mundelein senior Colin Wade is tied for 32nd after shooting a 79. Wade, who won Tuesday's six-player playoff at Kishwaukee Country Club, to secure the final individual berth in the DeKalb sectional, is 10 shots behind the leader, Glenbard West sophomore John Wild, who fired a 3-under 69.

Stevenson senior Jake Surane (83) and junior Conan Pan (84) are tied for 62nd and 64th, respectively. Libertyville junior Danny Keating had an 89 in his first state appearance.
