Maine West clinches playoff berth; Maine South, Leyden post wins
Maine West clinched its third consecutive playoff berth as the Warriors rolled over district rival Maine East 47-6 Friday in Des Plaines.
"We are excited about making the playoffs," Maine West coach Jason Kradman said. "We need to handle our business in the last two weeks."
The Warriors (6-1, 3-0 Central Suburban North) scored 21 points in the first five minutes on their way to a 47-0 halftime lead.
Danny Kentgen, who was 13-of-17 for 261 yards, threw 3 touchdown passes to increase his season total to a Northwest suburbs-leading 21. Kentgen had touchdown passes of 56 yards to Semaj Johnson, 4-yards to Jacob Riedl and 7-yards to Sean Collins.
Kentgen also tallied on a 3-yard touchdown run. Zach Norman also scored on a 60-yard touchdown run and Alex Peguero scored on a 1-yard plunge.
"It was great job by our staff," said Kradman, who credited his staff of Steve Piha, Mike O'Brill, Dan Wilson, Tony Manicke, Ryan Willett, Matt Boswell, Kyle Prater and Jemarcus Moody for preparing his team each week.
"They keep our guys focused and ready to play each week. "
Maine West will play at Vernon Hills next Friday.
Maine South 40, Glenbrook North 10: Maine South (5-2, 2-0 CSL South) pulled away from a 13-10 halftime lead to become playoff eligible for the 19th consecutive time under coach Dave Inserra.
Maine South, which has won five in row, got second-half touchdown runs from Michael Sajenko and Nathan Smith. The Hawks' Peter Skoronski had a 44-yard fumble return for a touchdown while Dan Lazic hauled in a touchdown pass.
Maine South can clinch a playoff berth when it hosts Glenbrook South next Friday.
Leyden 25, Addison Trail 6: Vince Fredrickson rushed for a pair of touchdowns and returned a blocked punt for another score as Leyden (2-5, 2-2 West Suburban Gold), broke a three-game losing streak.
Fredrickson, who rushed for 94 yards on 24 carries, had touchdown runs of 1 and 8 yards. He also scooped up a blocked punt by Tyler Lester and returned it 20 yards for another touchdown.
Eagles quarterback Jim Lonigro had a huge game by ground and by air. Lonigro rushed for 137 yards on 22 carries and was 5-of-6 for 114 yards including an 80-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Diblich.
Leyden wraps up its season at home in the final two weeks of the season. The Eagles host Downers Grove South next Friday.
