Girls volleyball: Carmel keeps winning, tops Grant

Annie Bart and Eileen Tarcha each had 6 kills, Kaitlyn Donton delivered 15 assists, and Carmel Catholic's girls volleyball team overcame a deficit late in the opening set to defeat host Grant 25-23, 25-9 in nonconference action Monday night.

The Corsairs improved to 11-1.

Riley Clark added 5 kills for Carmel, while Tayah Farris and Mya Mainzer tallied three apiece. The Corsairs' other contributors included Shannon Brennan (6 assists, 4 digs), Ally DiBartolo (4 digs) and Milana Moisio (11 digs).

Grant led 22-19 in the first set.

"Grant's middles really set the tone of Game 1, and we were fortunate to make some plays down the stretch to rally," Carmel coach David Pazely said. "Grant had a game plan from the start and Carmel wasn't executing at our normal level. We kept our composure and battled back but needed to be sharper from the start. Our opponents are going to come at us with nothing to lose, which makes them even more dangerous. We need to stay on top of our game no matter who we play."

Antioch d. Zion-Benton: The host Sequoits won the nonconference match 25-8, 25-7, as Ayanna Tommy had 5 kills.

Maiah Moll dished out 14 assists for Antioch (14-3), while Hannah Benes contributed 3 aces and 9 digs. Lexington McKillips added 2 aces and 4 kills.

Niles North d. Vernon Hills: The visiting Cougars lost their Central Suburban League North Division opener, despite Daniella Jarrell's 7 kills.

Vernon Hills (7-7) also received 4 aces on 10-of-11 serving from Jacklyn Self and 9 digs from Victoria Lukyan.
