Girls volleyball: St. Viator wins West Chicago tourney

St. Viator's girls volleyball team won the West Chicago tournament on Saturday and at the same time got back to .500 for the second time this season.

Coach Charlie Curtin's Lions (4-4) went 4-0 with three set wins over Dundee-Crown and Woodstock and two-set triumphs over Plainfield South and the host Wildcats.

Bartlett handed the Lions their only loss as the Hawks posted a 21-25, 25-11, 16-14 win.

Sophomore Lauren Allaire led the Lions' serving with 16 aces and also put down a team-high 34 kills.

Other top attackers were freshman Marcelina Gorny (23 kills), sophomore Lilly LaFleur (22) and sophomore Marie Torosian (22).

Sophomore setter Cailyn Harrington was 329-of-340 with 98 assists and also had 25 digs. Reanne Valera added 47 digs followed by Torosian (40) and junior Danielle Panzeca (26).

Round Lake Invite: Wheeling (9-9) earned two-set wins over Round Lake, Waukegan, Marengo and Elk Grove to go 4-1. The Wildcats' only loss came in three sets to Niles North.

Leyden Invite: Leyden (5-6) took second place in its own invite, going 4-1 with three-set wins over Conant and DePaul College Prep. The Eagles also defeated Chicago Public League schools Taft and Lane Tech in a pair of sets with their only loss coming to Willowbrook.

Leyden was led by junior Hannah Stocks (3 kills, 3 aces), senior Kinga Nowacyk (15 kills, 4 aces), senior Jocelyn Escamilla (68 assists, 4 aces, 16 kills) senior Summer Mohammad (18 kills, 3 aces) and senior Elle Engelke (12 kills, 2 aces).

Conant went 2-3 in the invite, netting two-set wins over Taft and DePaul.

Top attackers for the Cougars were Yuri Hara (31 kills, 12 aces 51 digs), Jessica Sharp (19 kills, 7 blocks) McKenzie Lunkes (11 kills, 4 aces, 11 digs), Perpetual Dyke (11 kills, 13 blocks), Farah Cisse (7 kills) and Emily Ytsen (7 kills, 6 blocks).

Junior Payton Litney (28 digs 52 assists, 28 digs) and freshman Gianna Spetka (39 assists, 16 digs) handled the setting chores.

Niles West tourney: Buffalo Grove went 3-2 to finish third in the 16-team event.

In their final match against the host Wolves, the Bison were led on attack by Shannon Coglianese (13 kills) and Megan Mitsunaga (10 kills), Abby Ferriss was 13-of-15 serving with 3 aces while Sofiya Savytska was 14-of-15 with 3 aces.

Claire Schneider set the attack with 28 assists.
