Girls swimming: Schaumburg's Dohrn, Nina Mollin set school records

In just the second meet of the season, two Schaumburg swimmers put their names first in the Saxons' record book Thursday.

Sophomore Madison Dohrn broke the Schaumburg pool record in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 58:20, while classmate Nina Mollin swam a 2:08.27 in the 200 IM to set that mark.

Both milestones had stood for more than 20 years, and those record-shattering performances helped the Saxons defeat visiting Rolling Meadows 119-66.

"Probably just the adrenaline," said Dohrn when asked about what led to her stellar day. "Having one of my other coaches here, and everyone supporting me, I just really wanted to break that record."

"I wasn't expecting to go 208 so early in the season," said Mollin. "it's pretty cool. It's quite an accomplishment and nice to see that working so hard has paid off."

Despite the loss, Meadows coach Monika Chiappetta said she took away a lot of positives from the dual meet.

"I think that we swam aggressively today, which was nice," said Chiappetta. "There were some season bests from where we were last year at this time, and some of my freshmen got lifetime bests which was pretty cool to see."

Meadows senior Amelia Bogdal took the 1-meter diving event with a score of 159.95, while teammate Izzy Konopka won the 100 butterfly.

"To see all the kids work together," added the Meadows coach, "I was very happy with how it went today. "We're very young - 7 of our 15 girls on varsity are freshmen- so we're trying to get our legs on, and we're led by three great captains - Jenna Pors, Abby Wiltse and Sydney Maier."

The Saxons were paced in victory by Andrea Torres, who won the 100 free (59.57) and the 100 breaststroke (1:19.23).

Schaumburg was victorious also in the 200 yard medley relay behind Hana Mollin, Nina Mollin, Keilahny Hernandez, and Torres; Lydia Steen (2:05.26) triumphed in the 200 freestyle while Dohrn won the 50 free.

Other Saxon wins were in the 400 free relay (Nina Mollin, Steen, Dohrn, Hana Mollin), the 200 free relay (Dohrn, Steen, Torres, Danielle Alley) and the 500 freestyle (Steen).

"I thought the girls swam extremely well," said Schaumburg coach Tim O'Grady. "There was a ton of energy in our last meet and we talked (before this meet) about coming out with the same intensity, and they took it another step up."
