Boys soccer: Warren scores late to remain undefeated

Max Florioni scored on a free kick in the 71st minute, and Warren's boys soccer team rallied from an early deficit to beat host Waukegan 2-1 in a North Suburban Conference opener Thursday to remain undefeated.

Waukegan took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute, but the Blue Devils answered a minute later when Ishaan Shah scored off an assist from Luke Schoenbrunn.

Warren improved to 8-0.

"Very exciting match between two quality squads," Blue Devils coach Jason Ahonen said. "Was very impressed with the way that Waukegan counterattacked and made us work for everything. They have gotten off to a rough start, but their talent and their coaching will take them a long way this year I believe. I believe that our team showed a lot of grit and grind finding a way to secure three points on the road."

Lakes 3, North Chicago 0: Camden Steinert made 4 saves for his first shutout, and Brady James scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season in the Northern Lake County Conference opener.

Evan Larsen added his sixth goal of the season, while Matt Tsuchida and Dejan Djenadic had assists. The game called with 22 minutes left in the second half when lightning was spotted in the area.

"Very happy with the team's play," coach Kevin Kullby said after his Eagles improved to 2-3. "Great passing, great possession, resulting in some nice goals. But to North Chicago's credit, they played tough defense and had some good chances at our goal."

Round Lake 3, Antioch 0: Uriel Sanchez scored twice, Maqiss Haywood had 2 assists, and the visiting Panthers won the Northern Lake County Conference opener.

Ivan Guerrero also scored, and Chuy Ramos had an assist as well.

"Solid defensive effort, just had some minor miscues that wound up costing us," Antioch coach Mike McDermott said. "The team played very well considering we were down two of our better offensive players."

Niles West 3, Vernon Hills 0: The Cougars fell to 2-5-1.

"We are going through some growing pains but have played really nice soccer lately," Vernon Hills coach Mike McCaulou said. "We have solid possession and our back line is playing well, but we lack confidence and decision-making going forward. Once we figure that out we will be dangerous."
