Boys soccer: Schoenbrunn, Warren skip past Carmel

A passing thunderstorm before game time left Warren's turf a bit wet and fast Monday night.

The Blue Devils used the field conditions to their advantage and stormed past Carmel Catholic 5-1 in a nonconference matchup in Gurnee.

Luke Schoenbrunn scored a pair of goals to lead Warren, which improved to 6-0. Nolan Ehlers added a goal and an assist, while Max Floriani and Brandon Medina also scored. Ishaan Shah, Sabastian Rodriguez and Ben Cortes each had an assist.

"It's just another step forward and that's what were doing," Warren coach Jason Ahonen said. "We want to get a little bit cleaner with our set pieces and finish our defensive shape. We're looking to improve every day. Today is no different from a week ago. It's another game where we're trying to prepare ourselves for the upcoming games."

The Blue Devils had the jump early, connecting passes and possessing the ball. It resulted in three goals in the first half.

Ehlers put Warren on the board in the 12th minute with a free kick off Carmel's wall, as the ball deflected into the back of the net. Schoenbrunn made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute after taking Shah's pass and tapping it into the goal.

Floriani scored four minutes later after receiving a pass from Rodriguez.

"We were getting great crosses," Schoenbrunn said. "We used the flanks a lot. It helps with the runs into the box. We played really well, and the tempo was up. Our first touch was phenomenal. We played together as a team."

Schoenbrunn added his second goal in the 44th minute, heading in Ehlers' cross from the end line. Medina finished the Warren scoring off a Cortes assist in the 70th minute.

Matt Grzesiak scored the only goal for Carmel (2-3) in the 80th minute.

"(Warren) was doing everything right, and they had a great performance," Corsairs coach Ray Krawzak said. "It wasn't our best. Against a team like Warren, you have to do your best in order to make it a great game. They got the jump on us early since we had some defensive mistakes (due to) the wet ball and our inability to clear in the first half."

Antioch 4, Westosha Central 0: Remi Ivanovas and Brock Jurinek each scored twice for the Sequoits in their nonconference win.

Ivanovas, Brandon Pinto and Adrian Aguayo had assists. Keeper Lukas Gutke notched his third shutout.

"The team rebounded really well after our first loss this past Saturday," Antioch coach Mike McDermott said. "Defense was great from Alex Correa, Eli Ruano, Aidan Trusky and Trevor Niznik. Very good ball movement throughout the game with very unselfish play."
