Girls volleyball: Carmel strong in win over Lake Zurich

A 20-6 lead in volleyball? Really, it happened Tuesday night at Lake Zurich. The scoreboard read Carmel 20, Lake Zurich, 6. Has Carmel had a lead like this in the early season?

"No, said, sophomore libero," Milana Moisio. "We kept the intensity up in the first set. We kept going strong."

Moisio had to bandaged up during the match.

"I get floor buns,'' she said.

For a sophomore, she sure does stand out.

Carmel stormed through Lake Zurich in two sets, 25-13, 25-18.

Senior Eileen Tarcha explained the big lead.

"That was a pretty good lead,'' Tarcha claimed. "But our team is really good. We really help each other out."

The first-set leads were 11-2, 14-4 and finally 20-6. Lake Zurich freshman Chelsea Williams went into serve and registered an ace. A Katie Keenan kill and the Bears had reached double digits.

Lake Zurich never led at any stage but the second set was closer. With another freshman at the line, Heidi Mason, a Leah Salit kill pulled the Bears within 14-11.

Carmel took a big step with Tarcha at the serving line. A Mya Mainzer block and a Riley Clark kill extended the lead.

"We executed our game plan well,'' said Carmel coach, Dave Pazely. "Aggressive serving, good ball control and solid defense."

Annie Bart led the Corsairs with 6 kills. Tarcha had 3 kills and 4 digs. Moisio had 9 digs, an ace and a kill.

"I love playing with this team,'' Mosio added. "They sure bring in the energy."

Kaitlyn Donton added 10 Assists for the Corsairs while Tayah Farris had 4 kills and 3 blocks and Tarcha added 3 kills and 4 digs.

"No one hitter had to carry the team as we collected 20 kills on the night and our defense showed relentless pursuit to keep the ball off the floor," Pazely said. "We're continuing to experiment with little lineup changes to find our best combination of players, but our depth provides us the opportunity to make subs and still play at a high level.

" Tonight was a solid team win and we look forward to taking on Lakes this Thursday."
