Cross country: Huntley's Geisler claims McHenry title

Huntley senior Ian Geisler entertains lofty goals for the 2019 cross country season.

Geisler is off to a good start in attaining those achievements.

The Huntley senior started the 2019 season by cruising to the McHenry County individual championship Saturday at Veterans Acres in Crystal Lake. No team scores were kept in a meet hosted by Crystal Lake Central.

Geisler traveled the rigorous 3-mile course in a time of 16:30.9. Cary-Grove's Maxum Caesar was a distant second in a clocking of 16:48.6.

"The 700 miles I ran in the summer really paid off," said Geisler. "I was really focused on winning the county meet for the first time. I have a lot of goals for the season. I want to break the school record, win conference and finish in the top three at the state meet. I want to have a great senior season."

Geisler was joined in the top 15 by teammate Jim Ozzauto who was 12th. Charlie Kucz and Ryan Besch finished 18th and 19th, respectively, for the Red Raiders.

Caesar's Cary-Grove teammate Ian Barnes was eighth. The top finisher for Jacobs was Andrew Doetsch who placed ninth.

Crystal Lake South was paced by Alex Picchi who was 10th,

Girls race: Jacobs senior Alyson Doherty is hoping her senior cross country season is without issues.

Doherty, who battled through iron deficiencies during her junior cross country and track campaigns, feels she is 100 percent for her senior season.

Doherty placed a solid seventh with a time of 20:39.3.

"I am taking medication which is absorbing the iron better and I really feel great," said Doherty. "I really felt great today and ran a good race. I had a good summer workout and hopefully it will translate into a very good season. I was ready for the challenge of this very tough course (Veterans Acres). The course is very unpredictable. I liked my kick at the end. I feel like I had a lot left. Our team did incredible today. We are looking forward to a great season."

Other than Doherty, the Golden Eagles placed 4 other runners in the Top 15.

Kelly Carpenter was ninth followed by Elisabeth Kania (12th), Alyssa Demma (14th) and Ella Tamburrino (15th).

Marian Central's Siobhan Stoll won the girls race in a time of 19:24.7 followed by Crystal Lake South's Mackenzie Aldridge who was the runner-up with a time of 19:46.2.

"I felt I ran a good race but the Marian Central girl (Stoll) was a little bit better," said Aldridge. "I have to keep working hard on my home course so I can run better as the season goes on."

Addie Frisch finished 17th for the Gators followed Bianca Garay who was 24th.

Cary-Grove placed 2 runners in the Top 10. Morgan Dieschbourg was fifth while Delaney Blohm crossed the finish line eighth.

Huntley was led by Bailey Wilk who was third and Grace Allen was 12th.
