Girls volleyball: Hersey takes opener at St. Viator

Hersey's girls volleyball team opened its 32nd season under coach Nancy Lill with a 25-14, 25-11 triumph over crosstown rival St. Viator on Monday night in Arlington Heights.

The visiting Huskies were led by Kati Kaburov (18 kills, 3 digs), Kaiya Eshoo (25 assists, 1 block, 1 kill), Juliette Vandenherik (3 kills), Janine Boyan (4 aces, 1 kill, 1 block), Olivia Mellen (1 ace, 1 kill, 4 digs), Maddie Mullin 10 digs 1 ace), Nora Zielke (3 kills, 10 digs), Kate Lubbe (1 kill, 1 block) and Sydney Pape (2 digs).

Lill, who won her 9,979th match, was facing a familiar opponent. St. Viator head coach Charlie Curtin played on Lill's boys volleyball team at Hersey.

Curtin's Lions were led on attack by Vicky Gorny (5 kills), Marie Torosian (2 kills) and Serafina DeMunno (2 kills) while Erin Aldana (8 assists) and Katherine Drab (3 assists) set the offense. Reanne Valera had 6 digs.

Naperville Central d. Fremd: Naperville Central stopped visiting Fremd 23-25, 25-16, 25-18 in the season opener for both teams. Breslin Reid (12 kills), Rylan Reid (6 kills) and Allie Belmonte (6 kills) led the attack for the Vikings, who received 14 assists from Elaina Rizzo and 7 from Lydia Vander Ark.
