At a glance:
This is the first meeting of the season between the clubs. The Cubs were 3-3 against the Giants last year, 1-2 at San Francisco. The Giants have made a recent run at wild-card contention under manager Bruce Bochy, who is retiring at the end of this year. Bochy likely will earn Hall of Fame honors for his managing. The Giants don't hit much, ranking at or near the bottom in key offensive categories. Evan Longoria leads the team in home runs (13), and he's on the injured list. Kevin Pillar entered Sunday leading the Giants in batting average (.256). The Giants soon will have to decide if they're sellers or buyers at the trade deadline. Bumgarner could be on the block; he has an ERA of 3.65. Reliever Will Smith entered Sunday with a WHIP of 0.92 and an ERA of 2.61 to go with 24 saves. For the Cubs, this begins a key three-city road trip that ends in St. Louis. The Cubs are 18-27 on the road.
