At a glance:

This is the first meeting of the season between the teams. The Cubs were 5-2 against the Padres last year. The Padres have been struggling to reach the .500 mark of late. They rank near the bottom of most offensive categories in the National League except for home runs, in which they ranked fifth entering Thursday. Padres pitchers were 11th in ERA (4.60), while the Cubs ranked third (4.03). Manny Machado, one of the big free-agent acquisitions of the off-season, entered Thursday leading the Padres in on-base percentage with a total line of .273/.344/.511 with 23 homers and 67 RBI. Hunter Renfroe led the team in homers (27). Cubs pitchers have recorded 6 straight quality starts. Lester is 3-1 with a 3.98 ERA in 7 career starts against the Padres.
