Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson likely heading to IL with high ankle sprain

During an April 26 game against the Detroit Tigers at Guaranteed Rate Field, White Sox rookie Eloy Jimenez tried to make a catch at the left-field fence and went down with a high ankle sprain.

Jimenez is back up and running, but he missed 21 games with the injury and had to go on a rehab assignment with Class AAA Charlotte before rejoining the Sox.

Shortstop Tim Anderson could be facing a similar fate.

Anderson departed Tuesday night's game in Boston with an injury, and he was diagnosed with a high right-ankle sprain.

Anderson reportedly had an MRI Wednesday morning, and he's likely to land on the injured list Friday, when the White Sox host Minnesota.

In 70 games this season, Anderson is hitting .317/.342/.491 with 11 home runs, 37 RBI and 15 stolen bases.

Leury Garcia started at shortstop for the White Sox on Wednesday against Boston at Fenway Park. Garcia has been the Sox's starting center fielder this season, but he is a natural shortstop.

Yolmer Sanchez and Jose Rondon also can play short.

To make injury matters potentially worse, Yoan Moncada left Wednesday's game in the first inning with a right-knee contusion after being hit by a pitch from Red Sox starter Chris Sale.

Rotation switch

With Dylan Covey and Manny Banuelos on the IL with shoulder issues, the White Sox have been scrambling to find healthy starting pitchers.

Carson Fulmer came out of the bullpen and started against Boston on Tuesday night, and the White Sox are likely going to dip into the minor leagues to find a starter for Friday's game against the Twins.

Covey started a rehab assignment with Charlotte on Wednesday.

Vaughn signs

According to the Chicago Tribune, first-round draft pick Andrew Vaughn is joining the Sox after agreeing to a $7.2 million signing bonus.

The No. 3 overall pick in the draft, Vaughn batted .376 with 35 doubles, 50 home runs and 163 RBI over three collegiate seasons with Cal.
