Baseball: Huntley, Cary-Grove, Hampshire win regionals

Streamwood tried for the upset Saturday in the Class 4A Grant regional championship game before Cary-Grove took control for a 12-2 win.

After a scoreless first inning, the Sabres jumped on top in the second inning with a single from AJ Reyna, an RBI double from Tyler Jones and an RBI groundout by Scott Wolford.

Cary-Grove responded in the fourth with six runs to take a 6-2 lead. Dymitri Kanellakis smacked an RBI double, L J Waco hit a sacrifice fly, and with the bases loaded, Jack Thompson drilled a 3-run double. Quinn Priester completed the scoring with an RBI single.

After the Trojans scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, they put the game away with five runs in the sixth. Bobby Jannusch had a sacrifice fly, Waco hit a 3-run home run and Jacob Duncan ended the game with an RBI single.

No. 2 subsectional seed Cary-Grove (22-13) will play No. 1 Huntley in the Class 4A McHenry sectional at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 5 seed Streamwood ends the season at 19-15.

Huntley 4, Belvidere North 2: The Red Raiders (28-9) won the Class 4A DeKalb regional championship despite only collecting 3 hits to advance to Wednesday's McHenry sectional.

Belvidere North took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth before the Red Raiders quickly scored two runs to tie the game in their half. Zach Model started the rally by being hit by a pitch, took second on a groundout and scored on A.J. Henkle's triple. Henkle then came in on an error by the left fielder.

Still tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Henkle gave Huntley its first lead on a 2-run single to plate Evan Tocmo and Model.

Kyle Maurer started and pitched into the fifth inning allowing just 1 earned run before Davis Pasco picked up the win in relief allowing 1 hit and no walks.

The Red Raiders, second in state last year, have won four straight regional crowns.

Hampshire 5, Hononegah 3: In the Class 4A championship game at Machesney Park, the Whip-Purs (19-14) fell behind 1-0 after an inning, scored twice in the second to go ahead 2-1 and held on to a tight lead the rest of the way to advance to the Class 4A McHenry sectional next Wednesday against Barrington.

Hampshire's last regional crown came in 2008 when the Whip-Purs also went on to win a sectional in Class 2A.

Logan Nespor and Dylan Petrey split the pitching duties. Nespor worked the first 5 innings allowing 1 earned run and 4 hits to earn the win. Petrey got the save after pitching around 4 walks in the final 2 innings.

Matthew Jachec homered and went 2-for-3. Caden Pyszka and John Brady Young also had 2 hits for the Whip-Purs.

Aurora Christian 8, DePaul College Prep 2: The Eagles (18-9) took the suspense out of the Class 2A Lisle sectional championship game early by scoring six runs in the first inning in a game moved to Plunkett Field in Elmhurst.

Aurora Christian advances to the supersectional Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Benedictine University against Bishop McNamara.

MJ Stavola started the game and pitched the first 4 innings, striking out nine and allowing two runs, one earned. Hunter Thompson threw a scoreless inning before Jake Kuntzendorf closed it out with four strikeouts and no hits in the final two innings.

Stavola and Kuntzendorf both hit doubles. Isaac Skogerboe was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI. Josh Smoot went 1-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.
