Boys volleyball: Wheeling wins first regional since 1996

For the first time since 1996, Wheeling has won a boys volleyball regional.

On Thursday night at St. Viator, the Wildcats outlasted Maine South, 25-23, 22-25, 25-13.

Jared Moser led the way for Wheeling with 22 kills and 3 aces. Jan Baranowski added 10 kills, 4 blocks and 3 digs.

Joe Hernandez anchored the defense with 13 digs while setters George Tsogtbaatar and Jared Urueta finished with 25 and 15 assists respectively.

Wheeling, which improved to 30-7, advances to the Glenbrook North sectional and will face New Trier in the 6:30 p.m. semifinal on Friday.

Barrington D. Lake Forest: The Broncos won the Lake Forest regional, downing the host Scouts 22-25, 25-15, 25-21. Barrington advances to the Machesney Park Harlem sectional to take on Rockford Boylan Friday at 5:30 p.m.
