Baseball: Larkin tips Elgin in 10 innings

Jeremy Gould singled with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to drive in Javier Cervantes from second base and lift Larkin to a 1-0 regional quarterfinal victory over Elgin at Trout Park Monday.

The game-winning hit resolved a pitcher's duel between No. 1 starters Max Anderson of Larkin and Elgin's Kyle Coates.

Anderson, who recently decommitted to Dubuque and will pitch for Elgin Community College, struck out 14 in 9⅓ innings. He allowed only two baserunners via a single and a walk.

Coates, committed to Washington University in St. Louis, struck out 12 in 8⅓ scoreless innings. He limited the Royals to 4 singles and a walk.

Cervantes ignited the winning rally by drawing a two-out walk from reliever Jon Palmer. No. 9 hitter Thomas Woodruff singled to bring Gould to the plate.

Two walks and wild pitch put two Hawks in scoring position with no outs for Kevin Vesta. His sacrifice fly to right field made it 1-1. Matt Lewandowski later scored the winning run on an errant pickoff throw to first base.

Michael Vaca earned the win in relief of Geno Frieri, who struck out 7 and allowed an unearned run on 5 hits and a walk in 6 innings. Vaca entered with two runners in scoring position in the seventh inning but escaped via a fielder's choice and a popup to keep it a 1-run game.

The win sends No. 14 Geneva (15-18-1) to a Class 4A St. Charles North regional semifinal against the host North Stars (23-10) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. North swept the 3-game regular-season series between the DuKane Conference rivals.
