Chicago White Sox place Banuelos on IL

The Chicago White Sox placed starting pitcher Manny Banuelos on the 10-day injured list Friday, which is not a huge surprise.

Even though an MRI came back clean on his throwing (left) shoulder, Banuelos is no stranger to health issues. He's now on the IL for the 13th time since 2009.

Acquired in a Nov. 1 trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor-league infielder Justin Yurchak, Banuelos opened the season in the Sox's bullpen and fared well, going 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA.

As a starter, he struggled, going 1-3 with a 9.15 ERA in 5 outings while giving up 9 home runs in 20⅔ innings.

With a lack of pitching depth in the White Sox's minor-league system, Banuelos was pressed into starting duty after Ervin Santana was released.

Dylan Covey also was shifted from the bullpen to the rotation when Carlos Rodon went down with a season-ending elbow injury.

Top pitching prospect Dylan Covey is due up this season - likely after the all-star break - and Michael Kopech should be fully recovered from Tommy John surgery when spring training opens next year.

Dane Dunning, who also is on the mend from Tommy John, Jimmy Lambert, Kyle Kubat, Blake Battenfield and Konnor Pilkington are other potential starting arms to keep an eye on. The present, however, is looking pretty bleak.

Banuelos is hoping to make a quick return from the sore shoulder.

"I'll lose my next outing, but probably that's the only one," he said. "Right after the game, they performed an MRI on my shoulder. Everything came back clean and that gave me the confidence that it's nothing really serious or bad. Right now, I think it's just inflammation. We're working on it."

The White Sox are going to need a starter for Monday's game at Houston. If they don't make it a bullpen game, the most likely move is purchasing Ross Detwiler's contract from Class AAA Charlotte.

Drafted No. 6 overall by Washington in 2007, Detwiler is a career 23-42 with a 4.36 ERA in parts of 10 major-league seasons with the Nationals, Rangers, Braves, Indians, Athletics and Mariners.

Signed by the White Sox to a minor-league contract a week ago, Detwiler made his debut with Charlotte on Tuesday and allowed 1 run on 7 hits in 6 innings to go with 10 strikeouts.

"That's still to be determined, how we will proceed on Monday," Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "We'll figure it out by the time we get there, I'm sure."
